Two Indian fishermen allegedly murdered Burmese intruders

Port Blair, Aug 09 (UNI) The Andaman and Nicobar police have recovered bodies of two Indian fishermen from a remote north Andaman island suspected to have been murdered by Burmese intruders. ''Burmese intruders are often arrested from the north Andaman region, who enter into Indian shores for poaching. In this case we have found some evidences that indicate that both the bodies were slashed by Burmese poachers,'' said Mr A K Singh, Superintendent of Police for Andaman region.

He said bodies of B Gussaiah and his son B Appanna, the two fishermen, were recovered by the police on August 4 from Haratekri, an island situated at Northern part of Andaman region, mainly used by fishermen for short halts. The bodies were hacked and the necks were slashed, police said.

Mr Singh added that presently four police teams consisting of personnel from the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), local police and villagers were searching for these intruders in various scattered islands of North Andaman.''Our teams are presently conducting search operation for these Burmese intruders at Gold Tekri, Baludera and Hiran Tekri and are in constant touch with our police control room.

The murderers could be hidden anywhere in these remote islands,'' the police officer told UNI.Andaman and Nicobar islands, consisting of 572 islands, are nearly 1200 km away from the Indian mainland but comparatively close to Burma and Thailand.

Out of 572, about 36 are inhabited and the rest are vacant, which was why it was regularly raided by poachers from neighbouring countries.

The Andaman and Nicobar Defence Command maintains regular surveillance along the Andaman sea but often these poachers manage to enter these islands mainly for illegal fishing and timber extraction. ''We have recovered ‘Burmese chaiy Patti’ (wild grasses found in Burma) from the stop and the style of chopping also indicates Burmese hand behind these murder,'' Mr Singh told UNI.
