Congress candidate elected chairman of Port Blair Municipal Council
Port Blair, Sept 26: Congress candidate Mrs Zubaida Begum was today elected Chairman of Port Blair Municipal Council, the lone civic body of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Mrs Begum defeated Sheela Singh of BJP by two votes.
The election for the post of Chairman was conducted today by Director, Panchayat and Municipal Election Mr Gyanesh Bharathy, who is also the Deputy Commissioner of Andaman.
Earlier, the Congress and its alliance partners had won the election for Port Blair Municipal Council on thursday Congress and its alliance parties DMK, and RJD had won 10 seats out of 18. Congress candidates swept six while DMK and RJD claimed two each.
Bharatiya Janata Party backed candidates could win five seats while CPI(M) got only one seat. The rest two seats went to independent candidates.
The Congress was backed by its alliance party DMK and RJD in today’s election while one independent candidate and the lone CPI(M) candidates also backed Mrs Begum.
Mrs Zubaida Begum had support of 13 councillors. Surprisingly after secret ballot she only got 10 votes while BJP bagged 8 votes.
