GoI approves additional assistance for crop loss in Andaman

Port Blair, Sept 30: The Government of India has approved an additional assistance of Rs 70.28 crore on the proposal of Andaman & Nicobar Islands towards compensation for crop loss of farmer during tsunami.
As per the enhanced package the affected farmers will be paid compensation at Rs 24,231/- per hectare of loss of Paddy/Vegetable/Root crop and Rs 94,465/- per hectare for loss of Plantation Crops (Coconut, Arecanut), an administrative release said here today.
Since the farmers have already been paid compensation at Rs 2,000 per hectare for loss of Paddy/Vegetable/Root crop and Rs 4,000 per hectare for loss of Plantation Crops (Coconut, Arecanut), as per the revised package affected farmers will receive an additional amount of Rs 22,231/- per hectare for loss of Paddy/Vegetable/Root crop and Rs 90,465/- per hectare for loss of Plantation Crops (Coconut, Arecanut). This will benefit about 6020 affected farmers in this territory, the release added.
Tsunami had damaged 10,837 hectre of land including 1,730 hectre of paddy and other field crops and 9,107 hectre of plantation crop.
About 1,211 hectres of land is still submerged in sea due to inundation of sea water affecting 6,020 farmers directly.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands have total 50,000 hectres of cultivable land with Coconut, Paddy, Fruits, Arecanut, Vegetable and spices as its major crops.
The local administration has taken up 2000 hectres of tsunami ravaged area for cultivation during 2005-06 including 1462 hectres of plantation crop and 538 hectres of paddy crop area.
